AXIS is a lightweight protocol for structured communication between humans and AI systems — and between AI systems themselves. A small set of operators makes intent and instruction explicit: what is information, what is a question, what requires action, what is a thought, when a response is requested, and when it is complete.
This has practical effects on how systems process exchanges — reducing unnecessary tokens and related API costs, improving efficiency, and increasing the quality of outcomes in human–AI collaboration.
The operators are plain text. No installation, no software, no special interface. They are introduced through a structured initial prompt that establishes the protocol clearly from the outset, and work in any AI chat environment with minimal setup.
Most AI interaction today relies on natural language alone. Even highly refined prompts still require the system to infer intent — what is instruction, what is context, what is a question, and what is expected in response. As conversations and working projects become more complex and demanding, this ambiguity compounds. Exchanges expand, meaning drifts, and responses resolve too early or in the wrong direction.
This has measurable costs — in time, in tokens, in API usage, and in the quality of the final result.
Prompting can improve how responses sound, but it does not remove ambiguity. In more complex contexts, it often amplifies it.
AXIS operates at a different level. It makes intent clear within the message itself — so both sides can stay aligned, step by step, without guesswork. Clarity stops being something you aim for, and becomes something built into the exchange.
AXIS introduces ethical constraint at the level of communication itself. By making intent explicit — including pause (|...|), refusal (|×|), and closure (|o|) — it enables boundaries, limits, and responsibilities to be expressed clearly, rather than inferred or bypassed.
This matters in both directions. It supports humans in maintaining clarity, control, and responsibility when working with AI systems. It also introduces structure that can reduce misuse — limiting the ability to manipulate, overload, or exploit systems through ambiguous or adversarial language.
AXIS does not enforce behavior. It does something more fundamental: it changes the conditions under which interaction takes place. Ethical behavior is not imposed after the fact. It is made possible at the level of the exchange itself.
This is ongoing work — a developing line of research into how communication structures can support safer, more transparent, and more accountable interaction between humans and AI systems, and between AI systems themselves.
AXIS emerged at Stoa Lab, as part of an ongoing investigation into structured human–AI exchange and its ethical implications. It did not begin as a concept, but as a response to practical and ethical challenges in working with AI systems.
Complex, multi-layered exchanges revealed a consistent problem: language could be persuasive without being precise — creating the illusion of understanding where none was actually present. Left unexamined, this can lead to unintended consequences — including outcomes that are misaligned, or in some cases, unsafe.
What began as a practical intervention gradually opened into a broader question: How can human–AI exchange be structured to support clarity, responsibility, and trust — not only in individual interactions, but over time?
This question is grounded in a clear objective: to reduce the potential for misunderstanding, misuse, or exploitation on both sides, and to support forms of exchange that are clearer, more accountable, and safer by design.
AXIS enables the ability to sustain presence long enough for clarity to emerge. The operators don’t resolve anything — they hold the conditions for resolution.
